I bought two copies of this book. One is the deluxe hardcover with sprayed edges, and the other came through my Allurial subscription, because the special edition cover and interior artwork were worth owning twice over. That should tell you most of what you need to know about how I feel about The Wicked Sea, but I'll explain the rest below.

What The Wicked Sea Is About
Here's the publisher's description:
Mermaid Zephyra of the Syl dreams of freedom. My Thoughts
Zephyra is a mermaid hiding in plain sight. She's shed her tail for legs and buried herself in a kingdom that would kill her on sight if it knew what she really was. She's spent years running from a captor she barely escaped, and returning to the sea means walking right back into his path, so she stays on land, scraping by on the streets of Mortia.
Arion is the kind of warlock people whisper about. Warlocks in this world aren't born, they're made, and the making involves torture that only the strongest survive. His entire purpose is hunting mermaids and merrow, the very thing Zephyra is hiding from him. But Arion is keeping a secret of his own. His magic is killing him, and the only cure lies with the heart of the God of Death, buried somewhere beneath the ocean's most dangerous depths.
When Zephyra is caught and sentenced to death, Arion offers her a way out: help him find the heart, and she lives. It's not trust, it's survival, and that's exactly what makes their alliance so much fun to watch unravel. The bargain forces them into each other's orbit constantly, and the more time they spend together, the harder it gets to hold onto the hatred they started with.
I am such a sucker for a true enemies to lovers story, and this one delivered on every level. The tension between Zephyra and Arion carries the entire book, and I was fully invested in watching two people who were supposed to hate each other slowly become the person the other can't live without. Gray takes her time letting Zephyra and Arion shift from wary allies to something neither of them wants to admit. I went in assuming this was a standalone. It is not. This is the first book in a series, and it ends in a way that makes that very clear, so plan accordingly.

Let's Talk About the Spice
I know that's the question most of you actually came here for. Is there spice in this book? Yes, and it's well earned. Gray takes her time with it, so the early chapters lean more into tension and restraint than heat. Once Zephyra and Arion's bargain forces them closer together, that slow build pays off in full. This one lands a solid 4 chili peppers.
Trigger Warnings
The Wicked Sea is dark romantasy, and it deals with heavy themes throughout. Readers should be aware of references to past abuse and captivity, violence tied to the systemic persecution of merrow, and the torture involved in how warlocks are created. There are scenes of imprisonment and a death sentence, along with the ongoing threat of a dangerous pursuer from Zephyra's past. As with most dark romantasy, expect morally gray characters and situations that lean into danger and power imbalance as part of the central romance. If any of these are hard limits for you, it's worth doing a bit of extra research before picking this one up.
