Must-Read Indie Romance Books You Need on Your TBR

Running this little corner of the internet is a privilege I don't take lightly, and I've been thinking a lot lately about how I want to use it. Yes, I love sharing the books I've read and loved so you can add them to your own stack. But just as important to me is shining a light on indie authors who are pouring everything they have into their craft.

Here's the thing people don't always realize about indie publishing. These authors aren't just writing incredible stories late at night after putting their kids to bed or squeezing in a few chapters on their lunch break. They're also doing the marketing, the cover design decisions, the ARC outreach, and the endless, exhausting cycle of promote, promote, promote, often while working a full-time job that has nothing to do with books. It's a lot to carry, and most of them are doing it without a publishing house behind them.

If you've been following along, you know social media is one of the best ways to find these authors and their books. So many of them live on Instagram and TikTok because that's where the readers are and where word of mouth actually happens.

A few weeks ago, I asked my followers to send me their favorite indie romance recommendations, and honestly, I was not prepared for how many of you responded. The list below is a mix of what you sent me and a few of my own recent favorites, organized by vibe so you can find exactly what you're in the mood for.

I have to be honest, I couldn't fit everyone into this post. There were so many incredible submissions that this article took longer to put together than I expected, so if you've been waiting on this one, thank you for your patience. If you're an indie author and you don't see your book here, please don't take it personally. This is officially becoming a recurring feature here on the blog, so stay tuned for more roundups like this one.

Let's get into it.

Indie to Trad: Started as Indie, Picked Up by Publisher

Y’all, this is why we do it! This is why we support indie authors and keep pushing the books we love. When we speak, publishers listen. The books listed below started as indie releases but were picked up by a traditional publisher due to the high praise they’ve received. Some of these you may already be familiar with, if not, check them out. Some of these are recently picked up so there will be a future re-release coming.

One other thing to note, some of these, though picked up by publishers, they’re small publishers so they could still use our help promoting them!

The Silversmith

by LJ Claren

Those of you who have been following me for a while know that I cannot stop talking about this book. My favorite read of 2025, hands down. A grieving young woman with royal blood is trained for war by a cold, unreadable man who may be more than her instructor. If you love yearning that will physically hurt you, start here. I thought The Silversmith was emotionally taxing, but that was nothing compared to the next book in the series The Incendiary that comes out September 8th!

Side note: I’m lucky enough to be able to go see LJ Claren on tour in Milwaukee and I can’t wait!

Read my review of The Silversmith and my ARC review of The Incendiary.

One of my favorite reads of 2026 and perfect for fans of The Bridge Kingdom or The Metal Slinger. Read my review of Songbird of the Sorrows. Don’t miss the next book in the series, Daughter of the Tempest, coming October 2026! Read my ARC review of Daughter of the Tempest.

Daggermouth

One of the most viral indie to trad books of the year, this dark, dystopian romance is definitely worth a read if you haven’t read it yet! A mercenary who botches an assassination attempt ends up married to her target in a dystopian surveillance state where love outside your class is a death sentence. This one went viral for a reason. Read my review of Daggermouth.

Consort of Stars

by Alana Powers

This one was originally slotted for release early 2026 but the the small publisher who originally picked this up, went out of business which pushed back its release. A princess training to rule falls for a prisoner and starts unraveling generations of lies about her kingdom's past. Inspired by Rapunzel and Anastasia. This one has been reworked with even more content since its original scheduled release and is expected to come out in April 2027. Believe me, it is worth the wait. Read my ARC review here.

Support Indie Authors However You Can

If even one of these books catches your eye, do the author a favor and leave a review once you finish. Follow them on social media, tell your friends, put them on your TBR shelf where other people can see it. These small acts genuinely move the needle for indie authors in a way that's hard to overstate.

This roundup is officially becoming a recurring feature here on Mom Needs a Chapter, so if you're an indie author hoping to be included next time, hang tight. I'll be doing more of these, and I'd love to hear from you in the meantime.
