There is something about a fairytale retelling that immediately pulls me in, especially when it promises a little romance, a little danger, and a lot of secrets. Consort of Stars by Alana Powers is exactly that kind of story. I went into this ARC not knowing much beyond the fairytale inspiration, and I quickly found myself wrapped up in Princess Soraya’s world of palace walls, forbidden connections, and questions that refuse to stay buried. If you love a sheltered heroine starting to question everything she’s been told, this one is worth a look.

Publisher’s Summary
On the continent of Acadia, a territory divided by the Sun, Moon, and Stars, Princess Soraya of Vespera has spent her life training for her time to rule. When a forbidden friendship with a prisoner sparks questions about her kingdom's bloody past, Soraya begins to unravel a web of lies that spans generations.
As Soraya's coronation inches closer, secrets of murder, betrayal, and stolen identities come to light, and she must decide how to rule a kingdom as well as free the man she loves from his cage.
Inspired by Rapunzel and Anastasia, Consort of Stars is a sweeping fantasy romance about a kingdom built on deception and a love that burns brighter than destiny itself.
My Thoughts
I really enjoyed Consort of Stars by Alana Powers and found Princess Soraya so easy to root for. This story blends forbidden romance, hidden secrets, and a complicated political system in a way that kept me turning the pages. Soraya has lived a sheltered life behind castle walls, but her secret friendship with a prisoner begins to raise questions about her kingdom’s bloody past and sets off a chain of twists and betrayals.
One of the things that stood out to me most was Soraya herself. She has been raised to follow the rules and prepare for a future that has already been decided for her, but you can feel her curiosity and quiet defiance growing as the story unfolds. Watching her start to question the world around her and the role she’s expected to play added a really compelling layer to the story. It made the stakes feel more personal, not just political.
I also loved the underlying tension between who Soraya is supposed to be and who she actually wants to become. That theme shows up in both the romance and the larger plot, especially as secrets about the kingdom begin to surface. There is a steady sense that something isn’t quite right, and I enjoyed how those pieces slowly came together. And just when you think you have a handle on where the story is going, there is an epic twist that I truly did not see coming. It completely shifts the narrative and adds even more intrigue moving forward.
The romance leans into a slow burn, which worked well with the overall pacing of the story. The connection between Soraya and Ardeen, who has been imprisoned since birth, is rooted in years of quiet, secret interactions, which adds depth to their relationship.
The writing itself is polished and easy to get lost in, and the world feels rich with history, even when all the details are not fully revealed yet. There are twists and turns throughout that kept me engaged, though a few left me wanting just a bit more. Still, the overall experience was immersive, and I found myself invested in both the mystery and Soraya’s journey.
Quotes that Stayed with Me
One thing I loved right away was the dedication:
“For all the girls who wanted to be the knight instead of the princess. Grab your swords ladies, we have enemies to slay.”
This immediately set the tone for the kind of story this would be. It perfectly captures the spirit of Soraya’s journey and the tension between the role she is expected to play and the strength she actually possesses. Soraya lives in a world where women have very few rights, and that reality shapes so much of her story. Once women marry, they are no longer seen as individuals but as extensions of their husbands.
What made this especially compelling is how often Soraya is reminded of that limitation. She wants to rule and wants to educate herself so she’s prepared to do so, yet she is dismissed and told again and again that the true power will belong to her future husband. There’s a quiet frustration woven through her story, a sense that she is capable of more than the world will allow her to be. That dedication feels like a promise to the reader that this won’t just be a story about a princess waiting to be chosen. It is about a woman beginning to question the system she was raised in and what it might mean to step beyond it.
Another quote that really stood out to me and felt like an important message in the story was:
“Scars are nothing to be ashamed of. They show the world what you have survived.”
This line feels simple at first, but it carries so much emotional weight. It speaks to both the physical and emotional wounds the characters carry and the idea that survival itself is something to be proud of. In a story filled with secrets, control, and hidden pain, this quote stands out as a quiet moment of truth.
It also ties back to Soraya’s journey in a meaningful way. As she begins to uncover the truth about her kingdom and the people in it, she is forced to confront difficult realities. This quote reinforces the idea that those experiences, no matter how painful, shape who we become. It adds a layer of resilience to the story that lingers even after you finish the book.
Spice Rating
The romance is a slow burn with about 3/5 chili peppers for spice.

Overall, I would give Consort of Stars 4/5 stars. If you enjoy fantasy romance with fairytale inspiration, political intrigue, forbidden love, and family secrets, this one is definitely worth picking up!
Final Thoughts
Consort of Stars is the kind of fantasy romance that quietly pulls you in with its atmosphere and keeps you reading for the secrets. Between the political tension, the fairytale elements, and a heroine you can’t help but root for, it delivers a solid start to a series. I cannot wait to see where Soraya’s story goes next!
If you are in the mood for a slow-burn romance layered with intrigue and a touch of rebellion, this is one to add to your list.
