If you've spent any time on BookTok this year, you've felt the buzz building around Harbinger. I got my hands on an ARC (thank you Geneva Lee and Entangled Publishing) and dove right in so I could give you my honest opinion. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. This new romantasy series is definitely one to watch.

Here's my full breakdown, kept spoiler-light so you can go in as unspoiled as I did.

What It's About

Arden Icaros was never supposed to matter. From the poorest of five noble bloodlines, she prefers life on the family farm with dirt under her nails over the fine dresses at court. She just needs to get through one boring ceremony, inherit her earth magic, and return home.

Instead, she's handed a dagger and with it, an impossible choice.

Now Arden is branded an omen of war, half the nobility wants her dead, and assassins are tracking her every move.

Her only chance of survival lies with the most feared man in Antares.

They call him Bishop. No one remembers the name he had before he dedicated his life to his order. Empowered to execute first and question later, Bishop is ruthless, terrifying, and utterly loyal to the kingdom that wants Arden dead.

He should kill her.

Instead, he offers her sanctuary.

But the longer Arden stays under Bishop's protection, the more dangerous he becomes. Because Bishop has secrets powerful enough to topple kingdoms, and a need for Arden that could ruin them both.

My Thoughts

It's hard to get into specifics here without giving something away, so I'm keeping this broad. I loved it.

Bishop is exactly my type of book boyfriend. Quiet, controlled, and a little unnerving to everyone in the room except Arden. There's a stillness to him that makes every scene feel like it could tip over into something at any moment. He and Arden build their chemistry slowly. Though it takes a while to get there, the payoff is well worth the wait.

Arden holds her own next to him, too. She's not chasing power or trying to be anyone's symbol. She just wants to do right by the people around her, even when it comes at a cost.

One small snag for me. The story introduces a group of immortals called scions partway through, and I finished the book still not sure how they're made. That might be a gap on my end rather than the book's, but I'm flagging it in case you land on the same question. Maybe it is a mystery that will come to light later in the series.

This book ends in a cliff hanger and doesn't wrap up much of anything. If you're the type who waits for a series to finish before starting, you might want to shelve this until book two is out. If you can sit with the wait, though, getting there is worth it.

Who Should Read This

If you loved the found-family stakes of Fourth Wing or the slow-burn, shadow daddy protector dynamic in ACOTAR, Harbinger is going to scratch that same itch. It's a strong pick for readers who want their romantasy with a genuinely dangerous love interest, political stakes, and a fierce and stubborn heroine who earns her growth.
