Why E-Readers Are a Gamechanger for Busy Moms

In a previous post, I promised I’d share more about my experience with e-readers—and here it is! This isn’t a sponsored post, just an honest reflection on how I went from a die-hard physical book lover to someone who rarely goes a day without tapping open my Kindle app. If you’ve ever wondered whether an e-reader is worth it—or if you’re a fellow convert—you’ll find something to relate to here.

A Book-Lover Through and Through

If you know me, you know how deeply I love books. I love the entire sensory experience: the feel of turning a page, the gorgeous covers lining my bookshelves, even the nostalgic scent of a well-worn paperback. I was firmly in the “never e-book” camp for years.

In college, I worked at Borders Bookstore (RIP, sweet book haven), and nothing made me happier than those quiet moments before opening or after closing, surrounded by stories. When Amazon released the first Kindle in 2007, I scoffed. Why would I want to read an electronic book that I couldn’t shelve, lend, or annotate with colorful sticky notes?

At the time, Borders didn’t jump into the e-reader race quickly enough—something that ultimately contributed to its downfall. They eventually launched the Kobo in 2010, but by then, the market was dominated by the Nook and Kindle. I wasn’t just mourning the closure of my favorite bookstore—I blamed the rise of e-books for killing something I loved so deeply. That didn’t exactly make me eager to try an e-reader.

Perks of an E-Reader

When Everything Changed

It wasn’t until 2013, when my daughter was born, that I began to see the appeal. Like many new moms, I struggled with nursing and feeding. Each session—often in the middle of the night—stretched to one or two hours, and I desperately needed something to do while pumping or rocking a sleeping baby.

Reading was always part of my nighttime wind-down routine, and I missed it. I needed something to occupy my mind that wouldn’t disturb my sleeping baby—or my husband. That’s when I bought my first Kindle Fire.

And just like that, I got it.

I could read in the dark without a lamp. I could stream Netflix if I was too tired to read. I could download a book at 3 AM on a whim (which, let’s be honest, happened more than once). It was a gamechanger for my sanity.

Even better? My husband—who happens to be a library director—showed me how to check out e-books from the library. Suddenly, an entire library lived in my hands, and I didn’t even have to leave the house with a newborn.

My E-Reading Evolution

Since then, I’ve gone through a few Kindles and eventually upgraded to an iPad, mostly for better internet browsing and app support. I still use the Kindle app for almost all of my reading, and I love the seamless experience.

Don’t get me wrong—I still love my physical books. I buy them on occasion, especially the limited editions (the ones with gorgeous sprayed edges or special covers). But I’ll admit it: I often read the digital version on my iPad while the physical one stays pristine on the shelf. Shhh… don’t tell my husband.

Kindle Unlimited = Romance Reader’s Paradise

Several years ago, I decided to try Kindle Unlimited, and if you’re a romance reader like me—especially if you binge contemporary romance or romantasy—it’s a dream. The instant access to thousands of books is addicting. That said, I’ve noticed it’s a little light on high-quality historical romance. Many of the big-name authors in that genre aren’t included, but there’s still plenty to keep my TBR list full (overflowing, really). If you like books with spice, there are endless choices of spicy romance books on Kindle Unlimited.

If you’re someone who finishes a book and immediately needs the next one (guilty!), the subscription is absolutely worth it. Sign up for the free trial here: Kindle Unlimited free trial

The Discreet Perk of E-Readers (AKA: No More Judgy Looks)

Let’s talk about something every romance reader has experienced: the cover struggle. You know what I mean. That moment when you’re on a plane, in a coffee shop, or waiting in the school pickup line, and you really want to read that spicy book you’ve been dying to dive into... but the cover is all abs, clinches, and thigh-high boots.

Enter: the e-reader.

One of the best—yet most underrated—perks of reading digitally is the ability to discreetly read whatever you want, wherever you want, without anyone knowing whether it’s a sweet closed-door romance or a full-on steamy fantasy with a tail kink subplot. Your e-reader doesn’t judge. And neither do I.

Whether it’s a title that makes your cheeks flush or a cover you’d rather not flash in front of your kids (or your in-laws), the e-reader keeps your reading life your business. And let’s be honest—there’s a certain freedom in knowing you can devour a spicy romantasy or dark romance at full throttle while sitting next to your kid at soccer practice.

e-reader outside

So yes, I’ll always love the feel of a physical book. But when it comes to those five-alarm reads with covers that belong in the top drawer? My Kindle is my best friend.

A Few Downsides

E-readers aren’t perfect. While they’re great for travel and midnight reading, they’re not ideal for the outdoors. My Kindle Fire and iPad both struggle with bright sunlight, which makes beach or poolside reading tough. The Kindle Paperwhite might be better for that (I haven’t tried it yet), but when I’m lounging outside, I still reach for a paperback.

Comparing Types of E-Readers

Based on my research and personal experience as a romance reader (and tech-curious book blogger), I’ve put together this comparison chart to help you decide which e-reader or tablet might work best for your reading habits. Whether you're a late-night binge reader, a poolside romance fan, or someone who loves flipping between books and Netflix, there's a device that fits your needs.

What About Audiobooks?

While we’re on the topic of digital reading, I can’t forget audiobooks. One of my best bookish friends swears by them—she’s an avid audiobook listener and is constantly trying to get me to dive in deeper. According to her, it’s a total gamechanger. She listens while folding laundry, commuting, grocery shopping, and even on her walks. Her TBR pile is practically flying off the shelves thanks to the extra "reading" time she squeezes in with her earbuds.

Me? I’ve dipped my toes in the audiobook waters. I’ve really enjoyed listening to them on long road trips—especially for family drives where reading a physical or digital book just isn’t possible. A well-narrated story can make a five-hour drive fly by. But I haven’t committed to Audible (yet). I’ve always told myself I’d rather read with my eyes, that I’d get distracted while listening. But the more I think about it, the more curious I get.

Audible has some compelling perks: exclusive titles, celebrity-narrated performances, and monthly credits that let you own the books forever—even if you cancel. Plus, the ability to seamlessly switch between listening and reading with Amazon’s WhisperSync feature? That sounds incredibly convenient for a mom constantly juggling tasks, interruptions, and a never-ending to-do list.

So maybe it’s time I give it a real try. My friend insists I’d love it for slow, domestic chore days or when I’m too tired to hold a book (or tablet). And if I don’t like it? Canceling is simple, and I’d still keep the books I’ve downloaded. It’s a pretty low-risk experiment with a high chance of adding more stories to my life. Sounds like a win.

If you’re already on the audiobook train—let me know your favorites! And if you’ve tried Audible, tell me: is it worth it? What pushed you over the edge? I did notice they offer a free trial as well. Perhaps I’ll try it.

Final Thoughts

I never imagined I’d be someone who reads mostly e-books. I thought I’d always prefer the feel of a real book in my hands—and honestly, in some ways, I still do. But motherhood, midnight feedings, and the magic of convenience changed my mind. E-readers gave me back the ability to read during a time when I needed books more than ever.

Whether you’re an e-book skeptic or a seasoned digital reader, I hope this post helped shed some light on why I love my e-reader. It’s not a replacement for physical books—but it is a powerful tool that’s helped me keep reading through every season of life.

I'd love to hear your thoughts! Are you team e-reader or team paperback (or a happy mix of both)? Let me know in the comments or shoot me a message. And if you have a Kindle Paperwhite, especially for outdoor reading—tell me everything!

About the Author

I’m a mom of two spirited girls and one oversized Saint Bernard. I have a degree in English from the University of Wisconsin. By day, I work in health care as a Health Literacy expert; by night, I’m off wandering swoony fictional worlds, chasing plot twists and happily-ever-afters. I’ve been in love with the romance genre for as long as I can remember—I've read thousands of love stories and even had my own meet-cute with my library director husband… in a bookstore, of course.
