Why Romance Novels Are My Ultimate Comfort Read

I’ve always loved books. Any kind, really. There’s something magical about slipping into another world, meeting new characters, and seeing life through someone else’s eyes. But if I had to choose a favorite genre, romance would win every time. There’s just something uniquely comforting about knowing, no matter how complicated or messy things get, there’s a “happily ever after” waiting at the end.

Maybe it’s because I’m a romantic at heart. I try to find the good in things—even when it’s hard. Life doesn’t always hand us the fairytale ending, but romance novels remind me that love, hope, and healing are possible. They give me that little boost I sometimes need to keep believing in the beauty of connection, second chances, and the magic of falling (or growing) in love.

I started reading traditional romance novels back in high school. At the time, I was more of an observer—watching crushes from afar, dreaming up what could be, but never really saying anything (well, mostly never). While I sat quietly in class, my mind wandered far from textbooks and lesson plans, slipping into the dreamy haze of made-up love stories. Romance novels didn’t just entertain me—they filled a space I didn’t even realize was empty.

My romance journey began with the queen herself, Nora Roberts. Her contemporary love stories were my first foray into the genre, and I quickly became hooked. Her strong heroines, emotionally satisfying plots, and just the right amount of drama pulled me in. From there, I discovered Lisa Kleypas, and her historical romances absolutely swept me off my feet. The period settings, the banter, the brooding heroes—I was in heaven.

Back in the early days of Amazon, I would order dozens of books at a time. I was too self-conscious to stand in the romance section at the library or bookstore as a teenager and young adult. There was still a stigma around romance novels, and I didn't quite have the confidence to proudly declare my love for the genre. So I built my collection quietly, one discreet cardboard box at a time.

For a long time, I was a firm never e-booker. I loved the feel of a real book in my hands—the smell of the pages, the weight of the story, the satisfying moment when I’d slide it onto the bookshelf after finishing. But all that changed when I had my first baby.

Suddenly, I found myself sitting in the dark for hours overnight, nursing and then pumping due to supply issues. I needed something to do during those quiet, exhausted stretches in the rocker. Turning on a light to read a paperback just wasn’t an option—but an e-reader? Game changer. I could read with one hand, in the dark, without waking the baby. And I did. Book after book after book.

Now, I do most of my reading on my Kindle through Kindle Unlimited, and I absolutely love it. It’s a treasure trove for romance readers. I go through several books a week—sometimes more. I’ll save my full Kindle Unlimited love letter for another post (because there’s so much to say), but suffice it to say it’s made accessing new stories easier than ever.

Soon, I was devouring one book after another, speed-reading my way through tales of enemies turned lovers, chance encounters that changed everything, and soulmates who finally found their way to each other. I loved getting so wrapped up in a story that I’d forget what time it was, turning pages until the early hours of the morning.

People sometimes say romance novels are predictable. And sure, they usually end the same way. But to me, it’s not about the ending—it’s about the journey. The slow burn, the angst. The miscommunications. The messy emotions, the electric chemistry, the quiet moments where everything changes. Those are the parts that make my heart race.

Romance novels are a cozy, emotional escape. They’re my reminder that even when things feel uncertain or lonely, love stories are still being written—on the page, and maybe even in real life.
